Novel Study with Comic Life, Popplet Lite and Socrative
Novel Study by Ashley Rollins, 4th grade teacher, Bridge Point Elementary School with support from Kim McLaughlin, Instructional Partner, and Marianna Husain, Educational Technologist.
Project Design
A fourth grade teacher approached our Instructional Partner at Bridge Point elementary to help her design a lesson for her novel study on Frindle. She wanted to cover summarizing, sequencing, and genres in writing. The IP came, to me, the Ed Tech on campus and we came up with ways to incorporate the the iPads in Ms. Rollins' 1:1 iPad classroom.
Here's how we integrated iPads into the lesson:

Here's how we integrated iPads into the lesson:
- To summarize details, take notes, and organize thoughts we used Popplet Lite
- To check for understanding, review concepts, take vocabulary tests, and take an end of unit test, we used Socrative (available as an app or online)
- Lastly, to incorporate a new genre, pairs of students were assigned a chapter to summarize and illustrate using Comic Life. This created a classroom graphic novel of Frindle.

4C's Connection- Novel Study with Comic Life, Popplet Lite and Socrative
- For the novel, Frindle, students collaborated in pairs to create summaries of one chapter using the Comic Life app for the iPad
- Choosing their own way to illustrate the chapter for the graphic novel and the graphic novel itself called for creativity skills
- Critical Thinking skills were used in the task of summarizing the chapter for the graphic novel
